Ukrainian Super Cup – Dynamo vs Shakhtar
21 July
Chornomorets Stadium (Odesa)
The Ukrainian Super Cup – the traditional beginning to the new football season in Ukraine – is set to kick off in Odesa’s sparkling Chornomorets Stadium on 21 July with a tilt between our beloved Dynamo Kyiv and despised rivals Shakhtar Donetsk. Like other European ‘Super Cups’, the match pits the domestic premier league winner against the winner of the domestic cup (where teams from all levels compete). Shakhtar won both titles last season, finishing two points ahead of Dynamo in the Premier League and knocking the side off in the Ukraine Cup final. This will be the 11th time the two sides have met for the Super Cup, with each side claiming five titles. Shakhtar won last year’s encounter 2-0 – perhaps all they need are their devoted Kyiv fans to make the trip down to give them the advantage.
