Kyiv’s Oldest Cinema Theatre
Everyone knows the Zhovten Cinema, but did you know that it opened its doors almost 100 years ago – in 1931 – under the title “The Ninth State Cinema”? It is located in the historic Podil district, not far from the Kontraktova Ploshcha metro station and was built in the constructivist style that was very popular in the 1920s and 1930s.
In 2014, Zhovten was intentionally set on fire and badly damaged. It was reconstructed in 2015 and with more modern equipment and an interior makeover. Don’t worry, special efforts were made to ensure Zhovten preserved its unmatched charm after reconstruction.
A member of the Europa Cinemas network, the venue often showcases festival films, long-awaited blockbusters and dramas in Ukrainian or original languages. Moreover, it boasts Gastroll’, a stylish cafe-bar that offers European cuisine and brings together the creative class, media people and movie celebrities.
