Kyiv is one of the hotbeds of Ukrainian basketball and Kyiv Basket is the city’s newest team. Much like hockey’s Sokil Kyiv, the city lost its beloved Budivelnyk – winners of 10 Ukrainian championships, 3 Ukrainian Cups, and a Soviet championship – after last season due to rising debts. In just its second season, Kyiv Basket will now try to become the third Kyiv-based team since independence to claim a Ukrainian title. Led by American guard Maurice Creek, the team has jumped out to a 5-3 record in a very tight SuperLeague. The team will host home encounters against Kharkiv’s Avantazh-Politechnik and BC Dnipro on 6 and 8 December. They will then host a Ukrainian Cup quarterfinal against the winner of BC Ternopil and Niko-Basket Mykolaiv on the 13-16 December weekend. The ladies team hosts games on 7 and 9 December against Kozachka Zaporizhiya and Berdyansk. All games are held at the Meridian Sports Complex of Palace of Sports, so be sure to check ahead of time.
