Ukraine kicks off UEFA’s newest football tournament – the Nations League – this month with an away game in the Czech Republic on 6 September and a home match in Lviv against Slovakia. The game in Western Ukraine will be played behind closed doors due to bad behaviour on the part of some Ukrainian fans at their final qualifying match for EURO 2016, a 1-0 loss to Spain in Kyiv. The Nations League is UEFA’s attempt to make ‘friendly’ encounters between nations more meaningful. European nations have been divided into four tiers, of which Ukraine is playing in the second division. One nation from each division will earn qualification to EURO 2020 – outside the normal qualification procedures. Ukraine will complete their home-and-away sets with Slovakia and Czech Republic in October and November.

Ukraine Makes Final Push for Basketball World Cup

Ukraine begins the final round of qualifying this month for next summers’ Basketball World Cup in China with games against Spain and Montenegro. The team stumbled into the final round by dropping their last two games by a combined score of 177-137. The team now sits fifth in the six-team group, although all the teams are separated by just four points. With six games to play, and only three qualification spots available, Ukraine will need to step up to qualify ahead of Latvia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Spain, and Turkey.
