Originally published by Nikolai Gogol in 1842, this story has been adapted for the stage by Mikhail Bulgakov. Widely regarded as a defining work for 19th century Russian literature, the story documents the journey of Pavel Ivanovich through the trials and tribulations of middle-class life, social etiquette, bureaucratic structures, and a complicated relationship with serfdom. Bulgakov adapted the work for the Moscow Art Theatre and it opened in 1932.
