All You Need is Love… and a bit of Delicious Content
“All you need is love / Love is all you need” — or so the iconic Beatles song goes. But let’s take an unexpected turn and add another vital ingredient to the equation for a happy life: food. We need it, we crave it, and sometimes, we raid the fridge for it at night. (Sound familiar?) When scrolling through our social media feeds, we are bombarded with so many recipes and tips that it’s hard to know where to start. Here is our selection of audiovisual inspiration to get you entertained and ready to dive deep into the foodie world.
PICK UP LIMES
YouTube channel: Pick Up Limes
Pick up Limes was created by Canadian nutrition expert Sadia Badiei, who is enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge and plant-based food philosophy with the world. Her community now has more than 2.5 million followers on YouTube. In addition to nutrition, she posts videos on minimalist living, recipes, and travel adventures, and even vlogs about her life in the Netherlands.
Watching her videos, you’ll build up an exciting repertoire of quick and easy meal ideas, with fruits, vegetables, whole-grains, beans, lentils and nuts the go-to ingredients. Check out the compilation “Meal prep on a budget – under $2 meals”, especially the Tofu Vietnamese Sub (although it might be a challenge to keep to the $2 budget if you do all your shopping in Kyiv supermarkets). Warning: Sadia’s recipe videos are so addictive that you won’t notice the time passing. Just don’t forget to cook your dinner!
TABLE MANNERS WITH JESSIE WARE
Instagram: tablemannerspodcast
Let’s move into the world of audio culinary inspiration. The podcast Table Manners with Jessie Ware is hosted by well-known British musician Jessie Ware and her mum, Lennie. The mother-and-daughter duo invite celebrity guests to their kitchen for dinner; recent guests include the musicians Dua Lipa and Ed Sheeran, and actress Emilia Clarke. Jessie and Lennie have also opened their doors to comedians, politicians, and even chefs. During the meal, expect lively, hearty chats, on any topic under the sun. At the end of each episode, the guests are asked to share what would be on the menu for their last supper: this is their chance to rhapsodise about their favourite dishes, restaurants and cafes, and much more besides. Great fun, and full of mouthwatering detail.
SALT FAT ACID HEAT
If you haven’t seen this show yet, don’t waste a minute and get on Netflix now. Based on Samin Nosrat’s New York Times bestseller of the same name, it’s essentially a documentary that reveals the secrets behind the principles of cooking, as well as basic ingredients that you thought you knew all about. What’s more, the cinematography is superb and Samin’s curiosity is irresistible. Never again will you take salt or lemons for granted: you’ll see cooking in a whole new light.
