Events coming up this week

Not sure what to do this week? Here’s our pick of the best upcoming events:

  • Children of the Night

It’s one of 2020’s most-anticipated ballet events: the second act of the new ballet “Children of the Night” is on its way to the National Opera Theatre. Choreographed by Alexander Abdukarimov, it was created for our favourite ballet couple (and Abdukarimov’s muses), Oleksandr Stoianov and Ekaterina Kukhar.

“Children of the Night” had its one-act premiere in March 2018 as a collaborative effort with the Staatsballet Berlin. The one-act version develops the concept of perfect androgynous beings, composites who were divided into ‘male’ and ‘female’ halves by fate. The separated halves – now men and women, searching for their soulmates – face struggles and temptations along the way.

The second act introduces a new character – the Seer, performed by the choreographer himself. Threatened by the prospect of the halves becoming whole again, the Seer seeks to undermine their efforts to find each other and rediscover true happiness.

  • Far in the Neighbourhood

This coming weekend, the Kyiv Municipal Theatre of Opera and Ballet for Children will offer a new, thought-provoking contemporary dance premiere. “Far in the Neighbourhood” is an existential piece, choreographed by Ukraine’s own dance maverick Artem Shoshin. The piece will tackle the complexity of life – the web of connections we make, the struggles we endure (both externally and internally) and the struggle between love and fate.
