The Vivid Notions of Sport Portrayed in Soviet Art Pieces
“Citius! Altius! Fortius!” is an exhibition that shows how Ukrainian Soviet artists found their happy medium during the period where art was limited in more than just one way. The guidelines for producing without the authorities intervening were as follows: you either apply Soviet propaganda and symbols to your work, or you leave this nation (which was not particularly easy). Fortunately, a third option was invented: to connect one’s ideas with sport, which would both lead to the officials’ satisfaction and would also help create new ideas without the stress of constraints.
So here we are, decades later to witness those fruitful works from 60s-80s of such talented people as: Yurii Fastenko, Hryhorii Shponko, Nina Bozhko and many more.
The exhibition is open to everyone until 23 September for FREE from 13.00 till 15.00 at the Bereznitsky Art Foundation. The nearest station is Kontraktova Ploshcha, from there it’s a 16-minute walk to Kozhumiatska 22. Do note, that it’s not open on Saturdays, Sundays or Mondays and be sure to always wear a mask.
