Chornobyl Gets the HBO Treatment

The series finale of Game of Thrones isn’t the only reason for Ukrainians to renew their HBO subscriptions this month as the American cable TV behemoth is set to release a five-part miniseries based on the 1986 Chornobyl disaster. The frightening trailer tells “the true story of one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history”, while A-list actors like Stellan Skarsgard (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest), Paul Ritter (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), Jared Harris (George VI in The Crown), and Academy Award-nominee Emily Watson (Anna Karenina) ensure that the series will focus on “the brave men and women who sacrificed [everything] to save Europe from unimaginable disaster”. As a co-production between HBO and UK-based network Sky, the series was shot in Lithuania and focuses on the event and immediate aftermath of the world’s worst nuclear disaster. The show premieres on 6 May and will run on consecutive Mondays until 3 June.
